Each year torwards the end of Summer into early Fall if you are fortunate enough to be on the water for the flying ant hatch and have the pattern to match the hatch it can be as good as any hatch all season. In many cases you will get to see all the trout that are in your stream including the reluctant lazy big ones feast on the plum flying ants as the float helplessly along. There are many types of ants in the world so tuning into what is on your stream is a big benefit. Otherwise to have ants in different colors from in this case ginger down to darker shades and black is a good idea. On this day there were 3 hatches going on at the same time. The first was a small ant too small to tie in black, The second was a black flying ant size 20 and the third was this honey rump ant. It was an exciting day if you enjoy topwater fly fishing. This fly is tied on a size 16 Partridge light dry fly hook, Ginger fine dubbing, Rusty rooster hackle, Uni 8/0 tan thread, and coastal deer hair as my final adaptation for this pattern.
