" Panel Discussion Going Live Very Soon " With the very renowned Mr. Alok Shukla (co-ordinator - Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan) & Dr. Goldy M. George 0:00 - Introduction 1:08 - Coal Fields' Location and Status 2:30 - Biodiversity Snapshot 4:08 - Elephant Reserve 4:38 - Mining Impacts 5:28 - Protests 6:19 - Methodology 6:34 - References 7:11 - Thunderbolt (Surprise Element) Snippets from a detailed and comprehensive video. (Coming Soon) HASDEO ARAND FOREST AND THE DESTRUCTIVE COAL MINING The biggest complete and contiguous forest in India's central state of Chhattisgarh is the Hasdeo Arand. This area, which covers 1,70,000 hectares, is a refuge for several wild animal species, tribals and most crucially, 5.18 billion tonnes of coal. One of the few remaining unaltered natural woods in the nation, this one cannot be duplicated by plantation forestry. Through Coal India, the majority of the Indian coal mining industry is owned by the government. But among the businesses pushing for a share is the Adani Group, headed by Gautam Adani. The coalfield spans 1878 sq km in total, of which 1502 sq km are covered with forest. Approximately 80% of this is covered in high-quality forest (116 sq km of extra land has a canopy cover of over 70%, while 1176 sq km has a canopy cover of over 40%). In contrast to other forest regions where coal blocks are positioned outside of highly wooded areas, the coal blocks in Hasdeo Arand are totally within the forest area and in densely forested sections. The majority of the residents of the Hasdeo Arand area are Adivasis and other traditional forest dwellers, making up a sizable and vulnerable community. The dangers that mining brings to the naturally occurring resources, tribal people, and animals are discussed in this video for the audience.
