In this vlog we have an excursion booked through Disney Cruise Line which is called The Golden Circle With Family Barbeque tour. We travel the 190-mile loop and see such famed sites as Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and Strokkur geyser. Listen to your guide share the story of the giant troll Bergthor-then meet the feared troll Gryla as she prepares lunch. On this adventure we: (taken from DCL Website) Board a motorcoach and travel 45 minutes inland to Thingvellir National Park, revered as one of the nation’s most sacred historic shrines. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park is home to Althing, one of the world’s oldest legislative assemblies, which originally convened in 930 A.D. Of particular interest is the Law Speaker’s Rock, noted for the nearby remains of centuries-old turf shelters. During your 45 minute visit, you’ll learn that Thingvellir abounds in history and outstanding natural beauty, with its stunning lake, lava landscape and rugged chasm walls on the rift where Europe meets America at the Continental Divide. Depart Thingvellir and travel one hour on a scenic road to Gullfoss waterfall, whose thundering waters throw a perpetual rainbow over a lunarlike landscape. Here, the River Hvita drops 96 feet in 2 falls, creating an awesome spectacle. Continue through the Golden Circle and listen as your storyteller guide shares the incredible folktale about the troll giant named Bergthor of Bláfell. Make a stop in Haukadalsskógur and head into the woods, where the well-known troll giant is buried. Look out for his huge etched headstone located next to a small church and the iron ring from his walking stick that hangs on the church door. Enjoy this idyllic spot and the possibility to take a drink of Icelandic mountain water from the nearby fresh water stream. Reboard your motorcoach and journey to Skjól for a fun-filled barbecue lunch. Here, you’ll meet Iceland’s most famous (and feared!) troll wife Gryla and her famous husband Leppalúði. Watch them storm about as they prepare a delicious lunch over a smoky barbecue pit. After lunch, take a short drive to the Great Geyser Geothermal Area, the site of multiple hot springs and the Strokkur geyser, which spouts every few minutes. Snap a quick photo during this brief stop and continue your drive toward Reykjavik. Travel to Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant. During this 30-minute stop, learn how Icelanders’ use of clean, green, geothermal energy has long surpassed that of any nation in the world. (More than 90% of all houses in Iceland are heated with geothermal energy.) The Hellisheidi Power Plant provides a high-tech exhibition with experienced guides who will detail this extraordinary aspect of daily life in Iceland. Be sure to check out the magnificent views of the surrounding lava fields and pillars of geothermal steam. Reboard your motorcoach and head back to the pier, passing through Reykjavik´s city center on the way.
