Pratapgad Fort Mahabaleshwar Tourism Pratapgad is situated around 15 kilometers from the town of Mahabaleshwar, a popular fort in Maharashtra. It stands at an elevation of around 1,080 meters (3,540 feet) above sea level. The fort was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, in 1656. It was constructed to defend the kingdom against the rising power of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur.The Battle of Pratapgad fought between the forces of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan, a general of the Adil Shahi Sultanate, in 1659. It resulted in a decisive victory for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is divided into the lower fort (called 'Padmavati Machi') and the upper fort ('Balekilla'). The upper fort houses several structures including temples, a palace, and various bastions.
