Les Grands Boulevards Series: A Walk Up Boulevard de Bonne-Nouvelle, Paris

The Boulevard de Bonne-Nouvelle, often called Boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle, is a lane located on the edge of the 2nd and 10th arrondissements of Paris. It is part of the chain of Grands Boulevards formed, from west to east, by the boulevards of the Madeleine, Capucines, Italians, Montmartre, Poissonnière, Bonne-New, Saint-Denis, Saint-Martin, Temple, Filles-du-Calvaire and Beaumarchais. The boulevard was built on the edge of the former bastion of the mound of Bonne-New on the side of the hill of the gravois, eminence constituted by a pile of filth over several centuries, where the district of Bonne-New is established and dominated with five or six meters opposite the marsh of the couture of the Daughters-Dieu, gardens market garden until the urbanization in the 18th century of the present district of Faubourg-Poissonnière. Below two or three metres, a low street, the lower street Saint-Denis ran along the boulevard. This street, which was abolished in 1832, was located at the base of the former pointed bastion, the salient of which was at the level of the present-day Rue d'Hauteville. The boulevard was originally a charge-and-run bulging between The Montmartre Boulevard on the former wall ditch and Saint-Denis Boulevard in hollows on the passage of the "new courtyard" between the two former bastions of Saint-Martin and Bonne-New. This bulging was partly flattened by fifteen thousand workers in 17091. The mark of this former bastion is noticeable by the width of the sidewalks on the even side between Mazagran Street and Hauteville Street. The difference in level between the old marshes of the Daughters-Dieu and the boulevard was largely eliminated by the construction of the latter and by the upgrading of the land to the north. However, this drop is still noticeable by the slight rise of the Rue d'Hauteville when it arrives on the boulevard.
