We started by cutting 2.2 x 6 cm spruce slats to a length of 130 cm. All together 42 slats, 21 for each side of the case. For gluing, we used two component melamine glue from Akzo nobel with open time of 45 minutes. We use this same glue for glulam beams, Its water resistant, has great mechanical properties and has a great resistance to high heath. After gluing blanks, as I was walking trough the workshop, I noticed an old failed wall art project I did for you tube two years ago and thought it would fit perfect on the guitar case. It would certainly spruce up the project so I dug up a 3d file and the size fitted almost perfectly when scaled down to case dimensions. After milling the inner sides of both pieces, the robot milled the outer surfaces. For one side, I used 12 mm 4 flutes ball bit and for other side I used 22mm two flutes ball bit to see the difference in surface finish. 12 mm 4 flutes bit turned out to give much better surface and much less sanding was required afterwards. The sanding was a nightmare as is always with soft woods like spruce. It took us almost 8 hours with 220 grit sandpaper until we were satisfied. After sanding, I applied 3 coats of water based matte varnish with light 400 grit sanding in between coats. Insides of the case were lined with 3 cm thick egg box sponge with part of it milled to a guitar body contours to keep the guitar from moving inside the case. As adhesive, we used spray glue for sponge and other materials. At the end, corner protectors, hinges, case lock latches and handle are screwed into place. White sealing rubber D-gasket is glued to the rim of top side of the case and when closed is squeezed to down to 4 mm spacing between two sides of the case. Final weight of the case is circa 10 kg. In the future, we paln to use thermally treated larch which sands much more easily and also reduce the final thickness to bring the weight down to less than 9 kg. The whole build took us 3 days.
