Exploring in and around Port Albert, Gippsland’s Old Port. History & Scenery. Before completion of the Gippsland Railway from Melbourne to Sale in 1877; Port Albert was the main entry point to the region for travel and trade. Ships arrived daily and coaches departed daily for the inland. Bullock and horse teams were also constantly on the road between Gippsland townships and the port. Goods, machinery and passengers for the goldfields as far away as Omeo, the Jordan Valley and Walhalla came by sea via Port Albert. For about thirty years, it was a bustling port before the decline set in, in favour of speedier and more cost-effective transport by rail. Fortunately, some elements of the old port have survived time to give modern day visitors an insight into prosperous days gone by. Tourism has, in recent years, returned a degree of prosperity to Port Albert to ensure the town’s regrowth into the future. The slideshow ends with a tribute to the multi-skilled Dr J.H.
