One of the top three largest festivals in Japan, the Tenjin Festival, seems calm and serene on the surface, turning into a city-wide party by nighttime, but we cannot forget who this festival is for, the deity of scholarship, Tenjin-san. According to Kitano Tenmangu, Tenjin-san terrorized the Heian Capital for 40 years as a vengeful demon. And while he has been pacified into a calm, scholarly spirit, there is a very likely chance his rage will return. Who is Tenjin-san and what did he do? He was a real person who lived in the early Heian Period and was brutally cancelled by the royal court. Join me in discovering the history of Tenjin-san and why the Tenjin Festival is actually really terrifying.
