Legend has it that Zhu Yingtai, an only daughter among several children of a local squire, beautiful and intelligent, had always dreamed of studying in an academy, in the days when girls were not allowed a formal education. Zhu’s father loved his daughter and didn’t have the heart to deny her wish. Thus, with his blessing and disguised as a boy, she leaves home to enroll at a distant Academy. Along her journey, she meets and befriends Liang Shanbo, a young man who is also headed to the Academy. The two recognize in each other a kindred spirit and soon become inseparable friends. Over time, Zhu becomes smitten with Liang, and yet Liang never suspects, treating Zhu like a brother. After three years, Zhu’s father summons her home. Liang and Zhu find their parting unbearable, and Zhu prevaricates to Liang that she has a sister who is very much like “him” and implores Liang to visit and to ask for the sister’s hand in marriage. When Liang arrives, he learns Zhu’s true identity and her arranged betrothal. Despondent over the loss of Zhu, Liang dies of heartbreak. Zhu learns of his death and mourns at his grave. Heaven and earth are moved by her grief and supernaturally split open Liang’s grave with a howling of wind and thunder, whereupon Zhu throws herself into Liang’s grave. As the elements subside, the lovers’ spirits emerge from the grave as butterflies, finally free to be together. “The Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto” was collaboratively composed in the 1950’s by Chen Gang (b. 1935) and He Zhanhao (b. 1933), when both were students at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Its popularity has grown since the 1970’s, when the repressive Cultural Revolution in China abated. Although written for violin and western orchestra, its melodies and harmonies give it a distinctive Chinese tonal sound. ... Davis Law San Francisco, CA February 14, 2015
