We are new chicken owners now! In this video you will see me finish the chicken coop and which chickens we choose to make up our flock. Sadly enough our first months of keeping chickens wasn't the sunshine and rainbows we hoped it to be... The chicken breeds that we have (had): Araucana (rumpless and with tail), they lay green/blue eggs. Millefiori Vorwerk Black cupper maran Sadly enough we had two chickens that passed. Both of them got ill very promptly. We learned that chickens are good at hiding illness (because they are prey animals), so usually when you notice that they are not well they are at the point that they lack the energy to hide their illness. Our first chicken that got sick probably had coccidiosis (we didn't have the time to have her poop analyzed before she died, so we can't say it with certainty) Our second chicken had no symptoms at all apart from a bit of depression the morning that she passed. We brought her body t a lab for an autopsy, seen it was the second death in our flock. They found cancers in her digestive tract and a ruptured spleen. They didn't give a conclusive diagnosis but told us that it could have been caused by a virus like Mareks disease. Mareks is something most chickens are exposed to as a chickling, and also a big fear of many chicken owners because there is nothing you can do about it. The deaths of our two hens took us by surprise. Especially seen all the care that we put in them. In the midst of it, it even made me wonder if I really wanted to go on keeping chickens. But the truth is that I just really like them. They are such amusing creatures to look at and spend time with.They all have their little characters and that makes keeping chickens so amazing. I accepted that a lot of things are out of my control and in the future, we might have deaths in our flock again. It doesn’t take away from the beautiful moments that we’ve spent with them.
