Here's another unforgettable memory from my experience in the Andres Segovia master class of 1986. I was scheduled to play a specific piece for my very first lesson with Maestro Segovia, and to my absolute dismay, he rejected the edition that I had provided for him. As it turned out, the editor had never been given permission to publish the work and was receiving royalties that should have been given to the now deceased composer's widow. The deceased composer was Segovia's lifelong friend Manuel Ponce. He declared the arranger a "criminal" and would not listen to the piece. Segovia promised that he would get the original composition in Ponce's handwriting to me when he returned home but alas he passed away before I ever got the chance to receive it. Since all of us in the master class were given assigned repertoire to play, I had to come up with something that I knew no one would possibly be playing. I chose a very simple study by Fernando Sor and the previously agitated Segovia lit up with such spirit and joy and proceeded to inspiringly conduct me through the piece. I have also included my recent performance on Sunday, February 27, 2022 of the study and must say I was reliving my experience with Segovia all over again.
