It is performed tonight in its entirety. The beloved mele hula ‘auana, “Ke ‘Ala Ka‘u I Honi,” is but a section taken from this wonderful ho‘oheno, expression of affection, for Queen Lili‘uokalani (1838-1917). This song was made famous by renowned recording artists Linda Dela Cruz and the Kahauanu Lake Trio, and is said to have been set to music by Keala and Tom Carter. The words eloquently state, “The sweet fragrance I smell surrounds all, it arrives with love and it is there where my thoughts are placed. 2nd Place: Kilioulaninuiamamaohoʻopiʻiwahinekapualokeokalaniakea Lai Hālau: Keolalaulani Hālau ‘Ōlapa O Laka Kumu Hula: Aloha Dalire “Kaʻena (Kuʻu Lei Momi)” Samuel K. Halstead penned this classic mele “Kaʻena, ”also known as “Kuʻu Lei Momi.” “There at Kaʻena is my pearl lei moistened by the sea.” “Your gentle sweet eyes are mine to love...Your sweet voice is heard on the plains.” A classic love song that will endure through time 3rd Place: Sarah Kapuahelani Sterling Hālau: Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima Kumu Hula: Māpuana de Silva “Kaulana nā Kona” Mrs. Alice Ku asked her audience, more than three generations ago, to “Nānā iā Kailua, Keauhou, Nāpo‘opo‘o, Ho‘okena, Ho‘ōpūloa.” That we can still respond in “lana ka mana‘o” fashion to her catalog of place names, her memory of lingering maile fragrance, and her call to the streaked and tranquil sea of her homeland is testament to her skill as a songwriter and to the aloha ‘āina in all of us who have unbroken, generations-deep ties to the Kona districts of Keawe‘ïkekahiali‘iokamoku. 4th Place: Amber Kanoelani Rosenberg Hālau: Hālau Nā Mamo O Puʻuanahulu Nā Kumu Hula: William Kahakuleilehua Haunuʻu “Sonny” Ching & Lōpaka Igarta-De Vera “Halemaʻumaʻu” The natural beauty of the fire goddess’ home in the crater of Halema‘uma‘u is described by composer Bill Ali‘iloa Lincoln and Maddy K. Lam. Places that are sacred to Pele and to her family are mentioned together with special features which arouse wonder in all visitors. “Behold the beauty of Halema‘uma‘u and its famous fire of the woman Pele.” 5th Place: Nicole Nalani Ishibashi Hālau: Hālau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leināʻala Kumu Hula: Leināʻala Pavao Jardin “Kaleleonālani” Composed in commemoration of a royal expedition of Queen Emma after the passing of her husband King Kamehameha IV, this mele describes her tour while visiting Maui to assess the needs of her subjects. At Kahului Bay she was greeted with a blanket of lehua floating upon the tranquil waters. The queen’s words are an inspiration to all of us, “Ka manawa kūpono kēia. Now is the time to act.” =====SOCIAL MEDIA===== Youtube    / @themerriemonarchfestival   Instagram   / merriemonarchfestival   Facebook   / themerriemonarchfestival   =====MORE INFO===== website https://www.merriemonarch.com shop https://www.merriemonarch.com/shop or (808) 935-9168 The Merrie Monarch Festival Fulfilling its mission to preserve and perpetuate the art of hula, each year the Merrie Monarch Festival provides a stage for the world’s finest hula hālau (schools) in order to showcase Hawaiʻi’s unique cultural art of hula.
