Now that Apple has released Dolby Atmos on its Music platform, binaural playback over ear/headphones is hot. In cinema and home theater the immersive formats have been around for a couple of years now, so let's listen how the various upmixing algorithms behave on speakers. 360 and spatial audio make it possible to experience this along with headtracking if you watch on a VR headset (or stick your phone against your forehead ;-). The stereo source we use here, is a Yamaha DGX660 piano. A Marantz 7702 MkII handles the various upmixing duties. The home theater is equiped with a 18.1 speaker system (7.0 base and height layers, 4 ceiling speakers and a subwoofer). A Leitch router sends the channels to the right speakers for the different surround options (Dolby Atmos and DTS:X use the 4 ceiling speakers for height, Auro-3D uses the height speakers for the height layer and the ceiling speakers as VOG channel in native Auro-3D decodes).
