Giants Castle Vulture Hide guide - Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier) conservation and photography

The Giants Castle Nature Reserve located in the central Drakensberg and is home to one of the conservation efforts to preserve the critically endangered South African population of Bearded Vultures or Lammergeiers. With only some 350 individual birds and an estimated 100 breeding pairs that live along the Drakensberg mountain range, the Bearded Vulture is in serious danger of going extinct in South Africa. The vulture hide at the Giants Castle Nature Reserve was initially built in 1967 to aid in the conservation efforts of these beautiful birds. The hide location was moved to the current position in 1977. The hide serves the dual purpose of offering great photographic opportunities to birding enthusiasts as well as an almost steady food source to the vultures, especially in the winter months when forage is more scarce and the vultures are breeding and therefore require additional food for raising their young. We found staying at the Giants Castle Resort very convenient as it makes the drive to the hide only about 20-25mins long.
