The terrain of the route was a combination of: field and woodland paths and tracks; a descent of several hundred steps; a disused railway track; hard surface drives, tracks, lanes and road sections. The walking was mainly easy on level ground or gentle slopes except for one steep descent down steps. Route finding was easy with obvious paths and good waymarking and good landmarks. However, there were a lot of paths and various waymarked trails within Benthall Woods and this could be confusing with a number of the paths having dead ends. Map reading skills would be advisable here. Some parts of Benthall Edge are along the edges of disused quarries which can be dangerous. Take great care and be aware of tree roots so you do not trip over the edge. There were 5 stiles to negotiate. What gear is on your hiking backpacking checklist?
