The DARK History Of Corfe Castle - Regicide, Sieges and Destruction!

One of England's most formidable fortresses and impressive castles is Corfe Castle, which is found in Dorset. It has stood for almost 1000 years, and was built following the Norman Conquest. It is a site where bloodshed occurred during the Saxon times, as the boy King Edward the Martyr was assassinated there. But in the 1200s, the castle was turned into an impenetrable stone castle which was besieged a number of times throughout the centuries. Corfe Castle has a long history of warfare, and it was also a luxurious palace where Kings such as King John and Henry II would spend much of their times. The defences of the castle were built so strong, that during the English Civil War cannon-fire could not breach the walls and the defenders held out for a long time. One woman Lady Mary Bankes commanded the defence against Parliament's army, but following the capture of Corfe Castle the site was demolished and slighted. It must have required a colossal amount of gunpowder to blow Corfe Castle to bits, but it was put beyond military ruin. However it is a site of bloodshed, sieges and much devastation!
