An eviction drive carried out jointly by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and the district administration in the Lankaijan area faced backlash from locals after claims were made that the land belongs to the Hojai district of Assam. This was during an operation aimed at removing approximately 400 occupiers who had allegedly encroached upon vast tracts of forest land within the council's jurisdiction. However, it later surfaced that there is no proper demarcation between the two districts leading authorities to call off the drive. "Officials from Karbi Anglong claimed that the area comes under reserved forest. But we found a polygon topology maps which show differences in the demarcation of the border. They thought that this area comes under Karbi Anglong but we found out that part of this area belongs to Hojai district. So we will get in touch with the officials of the Director of Land Records and Surveys and collect all the information," an official said while speaking to the media. During the eviction drive, excavators were run over several thatched houses, demolishing them. Subsequently, authorities set the houses ablaze. In addition to the destruction of the houses, numerous beetle nut trees were also chopped down during the operation. Locals claim no prior notice was served before carrying out the eviction drive. "Officials from Karbi Anglong administration entered Hojai and started carrying out an eviction drive. They did not serve any prior notice or information. They entered two kilometres into Padmidhala and started carrying out the eviction drive.
