Okehampton Castle, located on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon, England, is a significant historical site with origins dating back to the Norman period. The castle was established shortly after the Norman Conquest, around 1068, by Baldwin FitzGilbert, a Norman nobleman, to assert control over the surrounding area. Initially built as a motte-and-bailey fortification, it was one of the largest and most important castles in Devon, serving as the administrative center for the region. In the 13th century, the castle was transformed into a grand fortified manor house by the Courtenay family, who were influential landowners in the region. They expanded the castle with the addition of a stone keep, a great hall, and various domestic buildings, turning it into a luxurious residence. The castle's strategic location and impressive defenses made it a symbol of power and prestige. However, by the late 15th century, the castle fell into decline as the Courtenay's shifted their primary residence elsewhere.
