When a renowned film director accepts an Academy Award, he reflects on a comedian he collaborated with in his early career, crediting this man for his success. Unaware that the comedian is now destitute and watching the ceremony from a barstool, he continues his tribute. Kelsey Dutton (Buster Keaton) was once a prominent figure in silent comedies, but with the advent of sound, his career faded away a quarter-century ago, leaving him just another face in the crowd, a sad one at that. Currently, Kelsey sits in a bar, brooding over a beer. The TV is on because Barney (Percy Helton), the bartender, and Selma (Zazu Pitts), a movie enthusiast, are keen to watch the Academy Awards ceremony. Their viewing is occasionally interrupted by a group of noisy patrons. At one point, the screen features the famous director Arthur Vail (Joe E. Brown), who uses his moment of receiving the statuette to honor a forgotten actor who significantly contributed to his recognition.
