Virginia Zeani sings the Prison Scene from Act II of Boito's Mefistofele. Margherita has been abandoned by Faust and is imprisoned awaiting execution for the murder of her baby. She goes mad and here sings of the drowning. In the final scene, Faust returns together with Mefistofele, but Margherita rejects him. As the gaolers approach she dies and a heavenly choir whispers that she is saved. Mefistofele is sung by Zeani's husband, Nicola Rossi Lemeni, a celebrated portrayer of the role, and Faust is Umberto Grilli.
