Wide shot, bus at Gilo STORYLINE : A line of bulletproof buses was unveiled on Wednesday in a joint-initiative involving the Israeli Ministries of Defence and Transport and Israel's national bus company, Egged. The buses are planned for routes that have been subject to sporadic shooting attacks in the months since the current wave of violence. The outbreak was sparked by current Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's visit to a site sacred to both sides - known as the Temple Mount to Jews and Harem Al Sharif to Muslims. The Israeli Minister of Transportation, former Deputy Defence Minister, Ephraim Sneh, unveiled the new fleet on Wednesday in Jerusalem. One route will include the Jewish neighborhood of Gilo, which has been the scene of fierce gunbattles between Palestinians and Israelis in recent months. Gilo was built on land confiscated from the Arabs during the 1967 war, it stands opposite the Arab village of Beit Jalla and periodically comes under sniper attack. The buses reflect Israel's greater concern for public security and reinforces the feeling that the current outbreak of violence is a long way from reaching its conclusion.
