I Vow to Thee My Country with Garth Hampson, Harmonia Choir 20th Anniversary Concert

Garth Hampson, Soloist - Denise Hawkins, Organ Harmonia Choir of Ottawa - Kurt Ala-Kantti, Artistic Director Part of our 20th Anniversary Concert! For many years Harmonia participated in the annual Last Night of the Proms celebration in Ottawa, joining with Garth Hampson and the Maple Leaf Brass Band for an evening of songs celebrating the traditions of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. Our special guest, Garth Hampson, retired from the RCMP after a distinguished 34 years of service. He is a familiar face across Ottawa, as a performer, fundraiser, and community leader. These two hymns are staples of any Last Night of the Proms, an annual patriotic and celebratory concert in London, England, often repeated and duplicated in other countries with British heritage, such as Canada. I Vow to Thee My Country began as a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice, set to the music of Gustav Holst, adapted from the melody of Jupiter, one of the movements of his suite The Planets. I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace Concert programme: www.harmoniachoir.com/programme20thonlineversion.pdf See the whole concert playlist    • 20th Anniversary Concert   Programme notes: Alison Harding-Hlady Sound Engineer: Tom Barnes Video: Kevin Smith www.HarmoniaChoir.com
