Narcissus is about empathy, or rather a lack thereof. Being in the world for so long, being in so many communities, social spaces, and scenes, I am still somehow wildly astounded when it comes to recognizing the people who cannot grasp the concept of empathizing with others. I have become so numb to the prospect of one's own personal sensitivities and traumas be jeered at, to the idea of reading queerphobic stuff every day, to the constant fighting and bickering on account of some bad-faith person. To me, I'm so numb that it doesn't really hurt anymore. Instead I just find myself hoping that the people who are so coarse and angry all the time are able to experience the happiness and companionship needed to get them to figure themselves out.
