Steve Ditko was an American comics writer and artist who co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange for Marvel Comics. He was strongly influenced by Objectivism, the philosophy of Ayn Rand, which caused conflict with Stan Lee, leading to Ditko quitting drawing Spider-Man and eventually quitting Marvel altogether. Born in 1927, Ditko was raised in a working-class family and found inspiration in comic strips and comic books. After serving in the US Army, he pursued a college education and found a mentor in veteran comic book artist Jerry Robinson. Ditko began his professional career as a comic book artist in 1953 and worked for various publishing companies, including Charlton Comics and Atlas Comics. He returned to Marvel in 1958 and his captivating stories made him a popular artist. Ditko used the "Marvel Method" to create stories, which gave him significant creative input. He continued to create numerous other characters throughout his career. Ditko was a recluse who never gave interviews and ultimately ended up alone.
