King of Fighters '96 [Arcade] - play as Goenitz

This is a playthrough using Leopold Goenitz in the Arcade (NeoGeo MVS) version of King of Fighters '96. Read on below for more information... Goenitz is 2nd and final boss of the game, and he is a non-selectable character in both the MVS and AES versions of it. ===== ABOUT GOENITZ ===== Leopold Goenitz is an integral character of the KOF storyline because he is one of and the head of the 4 Heavenly Kings of Orochi. He has the power to command wind, and is a very powerful character in the storyline. Significant events involving him include: ---- Blinding Rugal Bernstein in one eye, and then instructing fellow Orochi members Mature and Vice to watch over Rugal as his secretaries. Later, he ordered the pair to do the same with Iori Yagami. ---- Activating the Riot of the Blood in Leona, making her become Orochi Leona which led to the death of her own parents, as well as everyone in her home village. ---- Slayed the then-head of the Yata clan and Chizuru's sister, Maki Kagura. ---- Attempted to end the heirs of the Kusanagi, Yagami and Yata clan (Kyo, Iori and Chizuru) all at once, but failed. ===== GAMEPLAY ===== In Arcade KOF96 he inflicts generally very high damage... he also does not need his power gauge charged to perform his DMs (except for the SDMs, the powered-up versions of his DMs), meaning that he can do them anytime he wants. Control-wise he can be awkward to use, mainly due to the half-circle motions required to perform his Whirlwind Pillars. And you will NOT be able to pull off the Tornado Throw DM with as much ease and consistency as the CPU does, due to it's 2 x half-circle motion. : ) ===== EXTRA STUFF ===== At the end of this video I have demonstrated Goenitz's assist "move" You can see this starting around 28:51. ===== ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / TRIVIA ===== ---- When Goenitz is queued on the sidelines (not defeated), if he is used as an Assist, his "strike" is glitched and does not hit the opponent. ---- He actually has a 2nd colour palette, despite being an unplayable character. ---- He has proper "background inactive" character sprites: reading his book (not defeated); and sitting down (defeated). Animations for these are also there. ---- He has a perfect team icon image. ---- He has his own ending in the game, providing that Chizuru is not on his team. ---- His full title is Goenitz of the Wildly-Blowing Wind. ---- He appears in KOF2000 as a Striker for Leona. ---- He is an outfit for Nightmare Geese in KOF: Maximum Impact 2. ---- He appears in KOF'94 Re-Bout as a statue in Rugal's stage background. ---- In the PS1 version of KOF98, he appears at the left of Omega Rugal's stage background. His body is sitting down like as if on a chair, without his head. ---- He appears as an exclusive playable character in the PS2 and XBox versions of KOF2002. ---- Him and Chizuru can be unofficially "unlocked" through specialist BIOS Dipswitch settings on the NeoGeo MVS and AES versions of the game. ---- His name "Goenitz" was inspired by and taken from an alien character in the anime Space Battleship Yamato. His Heavenly King title is a reference to the 1979 opening theme of Cyborg 009. ===== ABOUT KOF96 ===== KOF96 improves on the prequel in most aspects, and the Fixed Team Select feature from 94 and 95 has been discarded. In gameplay, the general damage infliction level has been lowered as well. The game sees the debut of Leona Heidern, Mature and Vice (the latter two as playable characters), as well as the conversion of Geese, Krauser, Mr.Big and Kasumi Todoh into KOF characters.
