Advances in neurosurgery: A new trial for frontotemporal dementia

Part of the 'Advances in Dementia Research' webinar series. Hosted by TDRA in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Toronto (AST). For more details on this series, visit https://bit.ly/351CWvO. Presented by Dr. Andres Lozano, this webinar provided an overview of functional neurosurgery, a specialized medical approach used to treat brain disorders. To date, functional neurosurgery has been approved for treating patients with Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. Researchers are now trying to determine if functional neurosurgery can be a useful treatment option for other neurological disorders, such as frontotemporal dementia. Dr. Lozano reviewed the FRONSTIM study, which is currently open for participation. The FRONSTIM study will evaluate the safety of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in a part of the brain called the subgenual cingulate. This part of the brain is particularly affected in frontotemporal dementia, causing symptoms like apathy and loss of empathy. The study will test DBS in people diagnosed with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.
