(24 Jul 2020) For the first time ever there are more female than male priests within the Church of Sweden, a sign that gender equality has made huge strides since the first woman was ordained in Sweden in 1960. Rev. Elisabeth Oberg Hansen has been a priest for over 30 years and is mentoring a young priest-in-training who is giving a sermon to a small congregation in Stockholm. She says sexist attitudes have mostly disappeared and that changing attitudes within the Church mirror developments in wider Swedish society. Sweden ranks first on the European 2019 gender quality index. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden has 1,533 women priests and 1,527 men. The archbishop and several bishops are women. With more women studying to become priests, gender parity had been forecast for some time, but wasn't expected so soon. Rev. Cristina Grenholm, the head of theology for Church of Sweden recalls the discrimination faced by female priests. With greater female enrollment in theology studies, the balance could now be inverted. For Sweden's female priests, gender parity is simply a reflection of society, not a feminist statement.
