I realised I had three pairs of microphones suitable for drum overheads, but had never used them back to back. So this was just a fun test mainly for my own education. This was NOT scientific. I tried to keep the drum processing to a minimum - recorded in UAD Luna with Ampex ATR Master Tape and Neve Summing on the drum buss. No EQ or compression on the overheads* I recorded the overhead mics with a Cranborne EC2, and 'Mojo' set to 50% 'cream'. According to Cranborne, the cream mojo emulates tube based pre-amps and at 50% it is subtle but just smooths off any hardness. I EQ'ed all the overhead pairs with vintage hardware Api 550a, 2db at 7Khz. they say just passing audio through a vintage 550a adds some magic, so I set them up how I would normally record on a tracking session, again, subtle. The Stager ribbons still sounded pretty dark, so I made an additional mix with another 2db of 7Khz (UAD Api Vision) and these mixes are noted as the video plays. Mics are: vintage Neumann KM84, Austrian Audio OC818 and Stager SR-2N. Which is your favourite. Drums are Pork Pie from 2005, cymbals are Istanbul Agop Traditional medium 15" Hi-hats, 22" Xist Dry Dark Ride, 18" and 20" Om Crashes (love these!), all sitting on Cymbal Resonance System mounts. The snare is a vintage Dandy/Drouyn from Brisbane Australia - let's go Aussie, let's Go.
