Here's a few thoughts and some excerpts all about Conrad Gozzo, the greatest of all studio lead trumpeters. You can hear Gozzo on many, many different recordings from 1950's and 1960's. Most famously he played on many of the Frank Sinatra Capitol Studios sessions in the 50's. But he's on countless movie and TV soundtracks from that period also - truly a very busy guy. That is still my favorite era of LA studio recording, and Goz was the cream of the crop. He's still the gold standard for lead trumpet-playing to this day. What a sound! When I'm playing big band style lead trumpet, Goz is who I think about and try to channel.
