Snow removal on the Carinthian side of the Großglockner High Alpine Road. Snowiest winter for 70 years (1951) For about six months, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which connects Carinthia with Salzburg, is buried under up to 20m high snow masses. Snow clearing has been a major challenge every year since it was opened in 1935. Since 1953 it has no longer been necessary to shovel by hand, but since then rotary plows have been used, which were developed by Franz Wallack, the builder of the High Alpine Road. For the 68th time, 12 full-time snow clearers tackle the unbelievable masses of snow. Within approx. 25 days, the huge machines dig their way through 500,000-700,000 m³ of snow on the 48 km long Alpine road to make them passable for visitors. The large, blue rotary plows, with their caterpillar chain links and mighty cutting wheels, not only inspire and fascinate technology-loving visitors, but also reach a much larger audience and amaze them.
