Applicant Name: Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra Project Name: Conservation of Indian Pangolin through community participation in Konkan region of Western Ghat Maharashtra, India Project Location: Sangameshwar, Dapoli, Mandangad block of Ratnagiri District, Maharashtra A very unique nocturnal insectivorous mammal, the Pangolin, falls under the category of an EDGE or ‘Evolutionarily Distinct, Globally Endangered’ species and is also the world’s most trafficked mammal. The Indian pangolin is no exception! Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra, an organization that works towards nature conservation, has proposed an assessment of the ecology and to ascertain the present status of the Indian Pangolin in the parts of the Northern Western Ghats - the Konkan region of Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra aims to establish a monitoring system to control poaching and hunting through patrolling activities in the selected region. It will also conduct workshops for Katkari Tribal Community and initiate dialogue between the local community and law enforcement agencies.
