Don't fall into the trap of thinking that material possessions somehow define who you are. More stuff won't make you happy so stop buying stuff you don't need to impress others. It doesn't make you a better person because you've got a fancy car. If you're confident in yourself and you have a sense of purpose, you'll realize that buying all that stuff is pointless. There's no need to try and show off or look cool. A lot of people make the mistake of equating happiness to materialism, but that's a very dangerous way to live. Every time you buy something, you'll get a short boost in happiness, but it won't last. Your fancy new car will get a scratch, it'll need maintenance and care, it might even break down... and then what? You'll be left searching for a new fix... a new way to validate yourself. If your happiness is tied to an object, you'll never truly be satisfied. That sh*t will end up owning you!. Happiness comes from knowing yourself and having a sense of purpose. /// Simon Squibb is a serial entrepreneur and founder of Nest and most recently The Good Luck Club and Blue Ocean Ventures.
