Today I found 2 pieces of quartz in the woods and used it to make a range of stone age cutting tools. Woodland Native Americans from the Middle Archaic Period, 5000 years ago, widely used quartz cutting tools. Quartz is abundant is uniformly distributed around North America. Unlike flint and chert, Quartz does not break in predictable fashion, making flint-knapping difficult with this material. However, it does break into flakes with sharp edges. All you need is quartz, a large hammer stone, and a large anvil stone. Just drop the hammer stone on the anvil stone in an even, measured way, and small quartz flakes will spall off. Depending on the size and shape of the flake, a number of cutting tasks can be done. Think flakes with even edges can be used as knives. Flakes with thin jagged edges can be used as saws. Thick edges can be used as scrappers. Flakes with a thick point can be used as drills and burins. Some flakes look like nearly perfect arrow heads and can be used as such. Even marginal flakes with imperfect edges can be used to throw sparks off a fire steel. Quartz flake tools are, in my opinion, an invaluable resource for the hiker, bushcrafter, and/or naturalist.
