San Luis Obispo is a city located in the Central Coast of California, north of Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Its name is Spanish for "St. Louis the Bishop" and it was founded by the Spanish in 1772. Incorporated as a city of California is 1856, San Luis Obispo initially served as a mission during the Spanish Empire, and its land was later divided into ranchos, or land grants, after Mexico gained its independence in 1810. Many of the buildings in the city follow the Spanish Colonial architecture and over 180 of them have been designated as historic buildings. The oldest part of the city is the Historic District in downtown.
