Tracking Hurricane Milton | 'Storm of the century' rips through Florida

Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida as a Category 3 storm Wednesday night with a barrage of tornadoes and aggressive wind and rain causing an unknown number of deaths. The devastating storm knocked out power across Florida leaving more than 3.2 million homes and businesses without electricity, according to poweroutage.us. About 90 minutes after making landfall, Milton was downgraded to a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph. By early Thursday, the hurricane was a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of about 85 mph (135 kph) and leaving the state near Cape Canaveral. -------------------------------------------------- For more on the lead story: https://komonews.com/news/nation-worl... _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: KOMO News on Facebook:   / komonews   KOMO News on Twitter:   / komonews   KOMO News on Instagram:   / komo4   KOMO News on TikTok:   / komo4seattle   Subscribe to KOMO on YouTube:    / @komonews   Watch more top local news stories:    • Видео   For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.komonews.com/ Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://komonews.com/watch Download our iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/komo-... An emergency alert from Pinellas County issued a stern warning to residents to stay put. Emergency crews began to venture out Thursday morning to conduct rescues and try to help those in need. “We’ll let you know when it’s safe to come out,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronsiter told residents. As the sun began to rise Thursday morning, photos showed the damage caused across the state. The roof panels over the home of baseball's Tampa Bay Rays were ripped to shreds and images showed the swaths that serve as the domed building’s roof were completely tattered, giving a clear line of sight to the lights that were on inside the stadium. Before landfall, the storm tracked to the south and hit Siesta Key sparing Tampa a direct hit. The National Weather Service previously said if Milton had stayed on its current track, it would have been the worst storm to impact the area in over 100 years. Ahead of Milton, Tornadoes wreaked havoc and touched down across the Sunshine State destroying homes and killing residents. The Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce, on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, experienced between six and 12 confirmed high-strength tornadoes within a span of 20 minutes, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson. The 10,000-square-foot St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office facility was also ripped apart in seconds. The storm slammed into a region still reeling two weeks after Hurricane Helene flooded streets and homes in western Florida and left at least 230 people dead across the South.
