Here's how to carve a cigar box guitar neck with just two simple hand tools - a half-round rasp and a spokeshave. I show this in real time, and including the set-up it takes just three minutes, all it needs is some sanding to smooth out the tool marks and it's done. We use power tools in our workshop, but I think woodworking is about using the appropriate tool and technique, and for carving a guitar neck, we find there's nothing better nor quicker than doing it with hand tools. You could use a 1/2 inch radius router bit to round over the corners of the back of the neck, but it still leaves you with a lot of work to do to get it all nicely rounded over, and a router won't deal with smoothly working into the transition of the heel / backstrap. To get a fully profiled roundover with a router, rather than just taking off the sharp corners, ideally you'd need a large radius bit , something like 3/4" (18mm) so that would doubtless need a 1/2 inch shank bit and a big machine to take it, preferably on a router table. The set-up time with a router would be longer than our complete hand carved process, so we think that using a router is more bother than it's worth as it takes longer, it's noisy, dusty, potentially dangerous and doesn't do as good a job as doing it with hand tools.
