With the introduction of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D—likely the fastest gaming desktop CPU for the next year or so—AMD has also highlighted its partnership with Activision, which recently launched the latest installment in the Call of Duty series, Black Ops 6. The 9800X3D officially offers a 500 MHz higher frequency than its predecessor, the 7800X3D. This new 8-core Zen5 processor is the first in this product line to feature built-in 3D V-Cache, providing an extra 64MB layer for improved gaming workloads. AMD confirms this is a second generation X3D where the CCD (Core Complex Die) with 8 Zen5 cores is placed over the cache, reversing the order compared to last-gen series. NVIDIA has come far with its upscaling techniques, which have solved the performance issues in demanding scenes for modern titles when ray tracing is turned on. As soon as NVIDIA started implementing various ray tracing and upscaling techniques, AMD and Intel also followed with their own FSR and XeSS upscaling methods. During its Q3 2024 earnings call, AMD's CEO confirmed that the company is preparing to transition to the next-gen Radeon GPU family based on the RDNA 4 graphics architecture. This new lineup is expected to be called the Radeon RX 8000 series, but given AMD's recent changes to its portfolio, a new naming scheme is also highly possible.
