Once played by the local Konjo people to accompany the martial arts form called manca', the music features drums called ganrang playing intense interlocking parts while three gongs - jong, katto'-katto', and taha'-taha' - provide a corresponding interlocking tapestry. The music is considered mandatory at the weddings of high caste Konjo people, who believe that the music protects the bride and groom from possession by malicious spirits.
