Welcome to Geo-Wednesday Digital. This month Joe LaCasce, professor at Meteorology and Oceanography (MetOs), will give a talk about the physics of the sea. The study of physical oceanography has its origins in Scandinavia. This includes the pioneering observations of Fridtjof Nansen, the theory of boundary layers for Vagn Walfrid Ekman, the seminal text of Harald Sverdrup and the theoretical work of Carl Gustav Rossby. As a result, we have "Ekman layers", "Sverdrup transport" and "Rossby waves". A guided tour will be given through the fascinating development of this field. Joe LaCasce has been a Professor of Oceanography in the Department of Geosciences since 2007. He studies large scale ocean dynamics, using theory, observations and models. While he doesn't go to sea nearly enough, he does have a small sailboat which he uses for exploring the Norwegian coast. https://www.ub.uio.no/english/courses...
