How to Repair a Broken Hammer in Six Minutes | Restoration

If you would like to watch another one of my projects -    • Incredible Transformation of a 1930's...   Or maybe this one -    • 1970's Old Timer Knife Repair | Resto...   In this week's restoration video, I repair an old hammer that used to belong to the grandfather of a friend of mine. The handle had broken right at the head and needed to be reattached. I used as much of the old handle as I could and although we lost a few inches of length, it turned out very well and should last many years. I started by removing the broken pieces of handle from the eye of the head of the hammer followed by scraping and sanding the remainder of the handle. I filled the grain with wood filler, sanded, and used a light stain to color the filler. I then turned to the head of the tool which I cleaned, polished, and blued to create a beautiful hammer head. I left two imperfections that may have been added by my friend's grandfather just to leave his mark and keep it unique. I shaped the handle to accept the head, fabricated a new wedge from an old piece of the handle, and fitted everything together. After a final polish, I treated the handle with boiled linseed oil and gave it a test on some nails in an old board.
