I've bought quite a few bikes in the last few years and have what you should do before you buy a motorcycle pretty well nailed down at this point. Before you buy a motorcycle, you should do these seven things: 1. Buy your motorcycle gear. You need to have this handled before you start figuring out how much you can spend on your first motorcycle otherwise you'll be tempted to skimp on gear so you can buy a more expensive bike. 2. Get training and/or your motorcycle endorsement. You need to know how to ride a motorcycle (and if you even like riding motorcycles) before you head into a dealership to test ride a bike. This is especially important for a first time motorcycle buyer (obviously). 3. Check insurance costs. Motorcycle insurance costs can vary wildly from bike to bike, so make sure you know exactly what you're going to be paying every month for the exact bike you're looking at. 4. Talk to people who know about the motorcycle. Choosing a motorcycle is a very personal decision, but if you are a new motorcycle rider, then getting advice and insight from experienced riders can be invaluable. 5. Know the value of the motorcycle you're buying. Check KBB, JD Power, and Facebook Marketplace to ensure you know how much the bike you're looking at is going for in the local market. 6. Get your own financing. Buying a motorcycle for the first time can be complicated so it's easy to just want to let the dealership deal with financing, but you can save thousands and put yourself in a much better negotiating position if you walk in what that part already handled. 7. Test ride the bike. A motorcycle test ride is pretty much essential to knowing whether a motorcycle is for you. If your local dealership won't let you do a motorcycle test ride, it's worth driving an extra hour or two to find one that will.
