Organ pipes built in 1521... exactly 500 years - 5 centuries ago... can you imagine that? You'll hear in this recording the almost fragile sound of the principal stop of the 1521 organ at Oosthuizen. 500 years of service and still full of energy. This organ has a complex history, as it's history is not fully known. Going back in time that far, is going back even 40 years before (!) Sweelinck was born (1562-1621). His psalm 140 is a master piece showing how in his time a psalm could be varied. Sweelinck succeeds in presenting the melody so clear and yet surround it with a most expressive variation of motives, runs, chords, effects, ... This recording was made during the semi-finals of the Alkmaar Schnitger competition in 1999. I still remember as to the present day how nervous I was, playing a keyboard that is even lacking a 'short octave'. Orientation on this keyboard needs time, all feels extremely tiny, even the desk.
