Punjab Polls Heat Up: BJP Stands Alone, AAP And Congress Clash | Lok Sabha Election

As campaigning reaches a crescendo in Punjab, with national leaders making a beeline to canvas support for their party candidates ahead of polling day (June 1), various voter sentiments are at play. The border state has had a history of emotive electoral politics. Unlike caste-based voting in other parts of northern India, the people of Punjab tend to elect candidates based on emotive issues. The state has a dominant Jat Sikh community (about 18 per cent of the population), followed by the 14 per cent Mazhabi Sikh/ Hindu Vamiki Dalit bloc, 13 per cent Ramdasi/ Ravidasi/ Adi-Dharmi bloc of Dalits, another 6 per cent of other Dalits and denotified ‘criminal tribes’, and 33 per cent Other Backward Classes (OBCs). But unlike other parts of the country, OBCs in Punjab have access to resources available to the upper caste Hindus and Sikhs.
