Extremely evocative and emotional song from Gopalakrishna Bharathi's "Nandanar Charithram" in ragamalika. In the story, a Brahmin asks Nandanar to plough his fields and insults him by saying that a low caste person like him who butchers cattle was not qualified even to go near a temple. But at night Siva arrives with his cohorts of Bhootha Ganas (demons) and finishes ploughing the fields by morning. The brahmin realizes that Nandanar was special and asks him to give him Guru Upadesam or spiritual advice as a Guru. Nandanar who is extremely self effacing, protests vehemently by claiming that he was a low caste person and the brahmin's slave too and was not qualified to give him advice. But eventually he expounds Advaitha Philosophy. Ayye Methakadinam is a derivative of the Thamizh expression "Ayyo! Romba Kashtam!" ("Oh no! It is really difficult!".....to give you advice.)
