Earlier tonight, I was talking with a friend (MrColionNoir) about hoplophobia - the fear of guns. We've had many conversations with others who don't share our enthusiasm of the shooting sports and how uncomfortable those conversations can be. However, it has become an increasingly prevalent subject for discussion, in light of recent events. After this conversation, I felt compelled to produce a video series on the subject. Some of these videos on the fear of guns (hoplophobia) will be centered around how firearms enthusiasts can have positive and constructive interactions with those who are against guns. However, I'd also like to make a video directed toward those who are afraid of firearms for you to share with the friends, family, or others around you who don't share or understand your support and enthusiasm for your second amendment rights. This video is to introduce the idea of hoplophobia. I grew up in a household that is firearm-friendly and learned safe firearms handling at a young age. However, when I went to school in Madison, a liberal center of Wisconsin, I encountered many with a completely different [antagonistic] take on guns. These people saw firearms as evil, aggressive entities that caused violence. I don't see things that way, so I had a difficult time understanding where those ideas generated. That's what prompted me to do more research on the fear of firearms. I first encountered some work by Jeff Cooper, "The Root of the Evil" (an excerpt from his book, To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth), who first coined the term "hoplophobia" (from the greek "hoplon," meaning "weapon," and "phobos," meaning "fear."). In this writing, Cooper expresses that the fear of guns is a deep-seated irrational fear, and even a mental illness. He felt that "hoplophobes" were not individuals who were capable of understanding logic or reason on the subject of gun control, and should, therefore, be removed from the legislative process associated with firearms.
