Family farming plays a fundamental role in food production, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable rural development. Technological advancement, climate change, new demands for food with specific socio-environmental attributes, and demographic shifts are just some of the factors transforming agri-food systems, to which family farmers must adapt. In 2019, 448 representatives from governments, civil organizations, the private sector, and academic institutions from 113 countries committed to promoting and strengthening family farming, giving rise to the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF) 2019-2028. In the region, FAO's Regional Office, in collaboration with the Central American Integration System (SICA), through the Central American Agricultural Council (CECAC), the Specialized Meeting on Family Farming of MERCOSUR (REAF/MERCOSUR), and family producer organizations, has driven actions aligned with global, regional, and national action plans. Since the launch of the Decade, the region has made significant progress in designing differentiated policies that facilitate family farming's access to better conditions for social, economic, and political integration. Similarly, the sector’s contribution to addressing the challenges posed by an inclusive and sustainable rural transformation agenda has been highlighted, ensuring that no one is left behind. Five years into the Decade of Family Farming, it is necessary to assess the progress made to date and the challenges that remain to continue enhancing the transformative and innovative capacity of this sector.
