Microphone Phasing, 3 to 1 Rule - Sound Speeds

If you swing a boom, you need to pay attention because you're two minutes away from understanding one simple rule of thumb you need to remember to prevent your microphones from phasing. This is really more about how you mix together two microphones in close proximity but boom operators need to have an understand of what's going on to help the mixer and post. Two matching boom mics in the same area will pick up the same sound waves. If the timing of the sound waves entering each microphone is slightly different, and both microphones are mixed together, the waves can cancel each other out and create some undesirable audible effects. In this video we'll discuss why and why you need to do to help prevent this. Note: This rule doesn't only apply to vertically stacked microphones. It also applies to microphones on the same horizontal plane. Make sure to subscribe for more content! Have a question?
