A Great Evening at Joliet Union Station / UD Tower, 07.08.11

This video compilation actually starts off at the Metra station in Lemont, several miles up CN's former IC, ex-GM&O Joliet Sub from Joliet. While waiting for a BNSF stack train (which I never saw) to pass over the huge bridge in town here, I grabbed a couple shots of Metra's Heritage Corridor service. Two outbound trains (of just the three that make up the afternoon service on this line) are seen departing and arriving the historic little depot here. Later, I have boarded one of those trains (#921, the last outbound run for the day) and as it comes into Joliet, the tracks rise up above-grade and the train meets a BNSF stacker waiting to get across the Rock at UD Tower. Commuters exit the train and head into Joliet Union Station. It departs across the Rock, then backs up the connector track between the CN line it operates on, and the Metra-owned line, into the coach yard to tie up for the night. Next, three BNSF Dash-9s bring a long intermodal train south across the Rock. As the train snakes around the curve south of downtown, a green signal lines up on the adjacent main for a local freight, led by one of the BNSF "Smurf" GP38-2s! These units came from the EMDX lease fleet, and were kept in the blue scheme, but with the new BNSF logo slapped on. Another EMDX Geep trails. The two trains parallel each other, then, surprisingly, bringing up the end of the train is a former Santa Fe caboose! Next is an inbound Metra Rock Island District train, departing the station and heading across BNSF and CN with both an F40PH and and MP36PH-3S pushing. After the Metra clears, there is room for Iowa Interstate's daily Chicago (Blue Island) to Council Bluffs, Iowa freight to pass through. SD38-2 #155 and new ES44DC #512 lead ballast cars, ethanol, chemicals, grain, some general freight, and a substantial cut of containers west on the Metra / CSX line (Metra ownership stops at the station, and it is all CSX from there until somewhere in central Illinois, though IAIS trains run over it the whole length from Blue Island). An inbound Metra arrives, and later, the last round of evening Pace suburban bus departures are seen from the platforms over the street on the north end of the station. Shortly after, the same Metra equipment departs, heading for the coach yard. Next, an intermodal from Corwith Yard in Chicago heads south under the old ATSF signal bridge. Two BNSF Dash-9s and an NS ES40DC lead. Not long afterward, as the sun is almost below the horizon, a massive lashup- three C44-9Ws and six ES44DCs- bring a stack train south on the Santa Fe. Finally, the last train of the night is a Metra Rock Island inbound run, which will turn here and become the second-last inbound run to Chicago of the day. ~Thanks for watching!~
