Hsia Ling Jun, also known by his stage name Yuen Biao, began his training at maestro Yu Jim Yuen's "Seven Little Fortunes" Peking opera school as a child. There he shared training with other children, such as Yuen Wah, Yuen Kwai (Corey Yuen), Yuen Chu (Sammo Hung) and Yuen Lu (Jackie Chan). This group forged a close friendship that lasted for many years. Like his peers, Yuen Biao soon began working in small film roles, highlighting his participation in The Eighteen Darts in 1966. After more than a decade as an extra and film specialist, in the mid-70s he was promoted to assistant to reputed choreographer Yuen Woo Ping's team, eventually becoming chief choreographer in 1977. His first leading role was in Knockabout (1979), directed by Sammo Hung and produced by the Golden Harvest company. During the 1980s, Yuen Biao worked in several action comedies alongside Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, which gave him some popularity in the West. In 1986, Yuen Biao began his career as a producer with the film The Edge of the Law, directed by Corey Yuen and starring Cynthia Rothrock. This would culminate in the founding of his own production company in 1992, with which he made his directorial debut with A Kid From Tibet that same year.
