The History of Desserts

Desserts didn't always consist of chocolate cake and ice cream - however we do know that since the dawn of man, we've been eating sweets of some form. Evidence from ancient civilizations suggest that they enjoyed an occasional treat of fruit or nuts rolled in honey. From about 3000 BC there is a discernable history of many foods to delight the sweet tooth. The natural sweetness of fruits seems to have been enough for most societies, until the widespread manufacture of sugar at least, in the middle ages. Initially, sugar was so expensive that it was reserved for only special occasions of the most well to do families. Ice cream can even be dated back 3000BC, though a little different to the kind of ice cream we see today. First invented by the Chinese, it was little more than flavoured ice. Marco Polo brought the idea back to Europe, but it was Catherine de Medici in Italy that popularised the sorbet. While difficult to pinpoint an exact time at which these flavoured ices became fully fledged ice creams, we do that by the middle of the 1800s recipes for ice cream as we know it today were in widespread circulation. The Wonderful New World of Desserts: Like marshmallows? Well count yourself lucky, as your ancestors had no idea what they were. Marshmallows were an invention of the mid-nineteenth century only.
